Birds of Devils Garden is loaded with wild birds, chief among them the endangered snail kite.
Found only in South Florida, the snail kite’s diet consists of apple snails, which thrive in wetlands. At Birds of Devils Garden, we have a wide variety of ecosystems, and vast amounts of wetlands.
apple snail shells and operculums
Spend just a few minutes at the
park
and you’ll be amazed how many empty snail shells are lying about, the former inhabitant having become a snail kite hors d’oeuvre.
You’ll also find abundant, shiny operculums (the shell’s “trap door”) which the birds have pried open, to snare their treat.
In our next post, we’ll show you how and where the apple snail egg casings grow into snails.
